BACHOK, Feb 28 (Bernama) – Since the PruBSN Microtakaful Jariyah scheme was introduced last March, RM160,000 has been given out to 16 beneficiaries of breadwinners who suddenly passed away.
Today, Prudential BSN Takaful Bhd (PruBSN) chief executive officer (CEO), Nor Azman Zainal, handed RM10,000 each to three of the receivers from Kelantan who make up the 12,500 eligible for it across the country. "The single mothers from Bachok lost their husbands a few months ago. This contribution is a way of helping relieve their financial burden," he said at a ceremony today attended by Kelantan Federal Development Department director, Amir Zakri. He said Kelantan is the biggest receiver of the scheme, with 8,600 people registered and 748 coming from Bachok. The scheme was begun in partnership with the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister's Department and is the first programme of its kind in the country which offers basic takaful protection to impoverished families (B40 income bracket and registered with eKasih) for free. Via the scheme, beneficiaries receive RM10,000 when a breadwinner passes away with the money deposited in their bank account within a week. Beneficiary, Noryati Mohd, 43, who lost her husband in November, was surprised by the aid she received today, saying it will be used for her vegetable farm and the schooling expenses of her four children. Amir said that as of Feb 24, there were 8,294 hardcore poor on record in Kelantan, with the most in Kota Bharu at 1,573 followed by Pasir Mas at 1,117 and Tanah Merah at 1,005. He said among the causes of poverty here are the lack of job opportunities and not being interested in job hunting. -- BERNAMA
